Its amazing the amount of things people are afraid of, the dark, sharp objects, heights, death, ghosts, public speaking, and small children come into the top 7 things my friends are afraid of. (I do have a couple friends who beg to trade with me when I am taking care of second graders and they are taking care of kindergarteners saying that “they scare me”
apparently the top ten fears of most people are
1. Fear of flying – I won’t make fun of someone for this, and I try to understand, but simply I love it, the only time I have ever been in a plane was a small one that only fit 4 people, it was amazing, that is the only way I can describe that feeling of ecstasy
2. Public speaking- This I can understand, (mostly because it is something I dislike doing), really though if you just practice, and DO IT, eventually, if you do it enough, you won’t have people looking at you with sympathy, or throwing tomatoes at you. yeah, yeah I know, I’m certainly one to give advice
3.Fear of heights – Many people say fear of flying and fear of heights are the same thing, really they’re not, a person can be afraid to fly, but perfectly fine with standing at the edge of a tall cliff. Heights are a fear of mine, but I find that just the thrill the fear puts in me, is exhilarating, I love it
4.The Dark – who wouldn’t be just a little bit nervous? it’s the absence of light, when its dark somewhere in the back of your head you just have to wonder…… are there things you can’t see in the light that are there in the dark, for all you know the cookie monster…… sorry they changed it (so sad) the veggie monster might come and eat you!
5. Intimacy – next!
6.Death – does it strike anyone else as weird that this is so far down the list? nope! This is one thing, I am happy to say, I have no fear of, I am Christian, I believe I will go with Jesus when I die. I am ready. I understand the fear for others though.
7. Failure - A perfectly logical fear (sort of) but whats the use of living if your too scared of failing to try doing something? Learn from your failures and try again, or do something different, it doesn’t matter if you fail, you tried something you had never done before and you learned something,
8. Rejection – Well Duh! everyone is afraid of rejection. I look at it this way, Writers are afraid that people, publishers, friends will not like their story. a while back I read a book on writing and it had a list of ways to deal with rejection, and on that list it had this
If you get thoroughly tired of publishers rejecting you, put a sign above your desk that reads “Some publishers wouldn’t know a good book if it bit them in the behind” if symptoms persist add an illustration.
on reading this I found it very amusing, decided to use this method with anything that was really annoying me, (does not always work, but it does relieve some stress)
9. Spiders - Creepy, crawly, tiny, annoying beasts!!!!!!!! oh, I can’t believe I said that. I don’t always like spiders but I do find them much better companions that cockroaches and ants, I believe cockroaches should be on this list in place of spiders, spiders at least have a small use in taking away the annoying fly’s that like to buzz in my ear. plus cockroaches look much more disgusting, and are larger, if I see a spider as big as a cockroach in my house of course I’m gonna squash it.
10. Commitment - I think of it as a fear of being trapped in something you can’t get out of gracefully, like trying to climb a twelve-foot wire fence in a traditional Victoria wedding dress
